I know that it is not quite spring yet, but it sure felt like it around here today. It was a beautiful, warm and sunny day and we hear it is going to stay this way for the rest of the week.We spent most of the day outdoors. The girls played while I tidied up a bit. Spring cleaning. Cleaned out the chicken coop, some garden beds, the potting shed, the refrigerator, and a few drawers and cupboards. Boy it felt good. And someone got a little spring haircut too.
So I know I said last week that I would explain my little miraculous encounter of a little certain someone. Meet Silas. The sweetest little boy ever. He has quite a story…
Almost three years ago my dear friend Bill died of a brain aneurism. He was due to be married to his sweet fiance Lori that summer. On his death bed, while meeting about his organs to be donated, the option of Bill’s sperm came up. Lori had always wanted a child and so she asked for them to be saved for herself. Almost three years later I attended the birth of this sweet little miracle. It was one of most beautiful, emotional, unbelievable experiences of my life. And he was born on my little Hannah’s birthday too. The funny thing is that Norah and his mama also share a birthday. This little boy, name after the woods where his papa loved to be, is so very beautiful. And his mama? She is the strongest, sweetest, most peaceful woman ever. She is quite amazing.
Last night I stayed with this mama and baby. As I rocked little Silas to sleep, and listened to his mama breathe softly to sleep herself I felt an amazing sense of peace fall over me. I couldn’t help but feel someone else in the room.
Lots of times around here you will here “Ma oh Ma!” This means that we as a family have all turned back time and are living out on the prairie or maybe in the woods as the Ingalls family. That’s Pa up there chopping wood to keep our little log cabin warm. And that’s Laura up there taking the wood to the hearth. And yes that’s Ma up there with her Chuck Taylors. They may not be the warmest during The Long Winter but you know it’s important to be stylish deep in the big woods of Wisconsin.
Just when I said I was loving the rhythm of daily posts…..
well you see there is an explanation, a miraculous happening, involving the birth of another little being born on the same day as my little one. Life is so amazing. It’s been one of those weeks where life sort of stood still. I will post about it all later this week, but for now we managed to shake up that stillness and fit in my sweet little girl’s 8th birthday party at the bowling alley. Happy birthday my sweet little Hannah. You bring such joy to all, especially to this ever so lucky mama. xoxox
I have been enjoying the rhythm of daily posts here. I find with most things that once you get into a daily groove you actually really look forward to something. I need to get back to that daily rhythm of exercise for myself, but for now I will remain content with what I have here in this space.
We can tend to be an on the go kind of family at times but lately we have been home-bodies and it feels just right. Today was a hang at home kind of day doing simple things like cooking, washing dishes, and playing “office”.
We are gearing up for a birthday of a certain 8 year old around here. A spaghetti dinner and chocolate fondue (again) have been requested and an exciting present is in the works. More to come…….
a not so busy day involving some curried vegetable soup, a visit to our local cafe for a treat, some knitting and watching these.
what did you do today?
Wow we had a fun filled day and our bellies are full! The morning started with the opening of valentine boxes which were full of chocolates, hearts, love notes, and even new umbrellas. Then it was strawberries and whipped cream for breakfast and of course a few chocolates too. Papa and I found a valentine box that I had made for him many, many moons ago. Over the past 18 years he has filled it with love notes, movie and museum tickets, playbills, train tickets, letters and more. It was so fun looking through it all together today. And the girls had fun listening to stories of our past of courting and falling in love. After the morning festivities, it was off to the great outdoors (well just our backyard) to make a snow family complete with rosy red cheeks. When my toes were numb, indoors I went to start a dinner of homemade macaroni and cheese (recipe from here ) , and collards greens with stewed tomatoes. We still found room for chocolate fondue with fruit for dessert and to top it off since today also celebrates the Chinese new year we celebrated with some fortune cookies. While were we out building in the snow Hannah turned to me and said “Mama this is the nicest Valentines Day ever.” I couldn’t have agreed more. Hope you all had a day full of love and of course a little chocolate too. xo
