we spent the day sledding at a friend’s yesterday and then headed out in search of our christmas tree.
the snow and slippery roads didn’t keep us from trekking out and we had the tree farm all to ourselves.
it was bitter cold but we made sure to bundle up and the campfire was a bonus.
we found the perfect little fraser fir, strapped it on the roof and sang christmas carols all the way home.

tonight the girls are out with chris for a hot chocolate/christmas shopping date while i host craft circle.
i hope to finish up a few christmas gifts including a stocking for harry.

the tree is trimmed, the fire is lit, the kettle is on and christmas tunes are on shuffle as i wait for my guests.

You know how to make a girl blush

April 1, 2013

well you sure all know how to make a girl blush!! thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to write to me.
i so appreciate all of your thoughtful comments.
i also appreciated those of you who gave me suggestions and ideas.
and it was so neat to hear from many of you for the first time.

you have all encouraged me to come back here more often and focus more on what we do in our every day lives, our traditions, holidays and parties, houseplants, gardening, thrifted finds and my mother’s home and garden.
i also appreciated the suggestion about answering more of your questions within the comment section. in fact i even took the time to personally answer each and every comment on the last post and i had so much fun doing it!

at the same time it also feels so good to know that you all enjoy coming here to find this space just the way it is. so thank you friends!

easter weekend was lovely with some warm weather and sunshine mixed in which was such a treat.

the girls came down on sunday to find their easter baskets filled with chocolates, seed packets, a succulent plant and other little goodies.
we then headed outside for an egg hunt. i had hid the eggs earlier that morning and placed one with a little face drawn on inside the coop. we all laughed when it was found right next to a freshly laid ‘americana’ blue egg.
over by the birdbath the girls found the the basket of confetti eggs (cascarons). this is a tradition that has been carried on since i was a little girl. they are so easy to make. and yes they make one big colorful mess but are so much fun.

i did however keep finding pieces of confetti in my dutch baby at breakfast.

we are all packed up and ready to go.
my mom is up at the lake already and says it is in the 70s.
i’ve got socks and a sweater packed for cool nights by the fire.
lots of tomatoes for blts.
our favorite card games including milles bornes.
a knitting project.
a new book from the library.
cast iron skillets for dutch babies and bacon.
and a guitar, a uke and this book for lots of sing alongs.

i think this year i will post a few photos each day of our trip.
have a great week.

Valentine Boxes

February 11, 2012

when i was young we always made valentine boxes every year.
a shoebox or oatmeal tin would be turned into a mailbox to collect all of the valentines from schoolmates, cards from grandparents that came in the mail and any other little love notes or treats that came our way.
then on valentines day we would open the box to find all of the love in one big burst.
yesterday the girls had a few friends over to share this little tradition of ours.
there was also whipped cream and strawberries, cupcakes and of course conversational hearts.
i had to laugh at how the messages on the hearts have changed since i was a girl.
LOL and text me!! too funny.

our fourth year at lake shehawken.
each year we love it more and more.
a week full of just being.
along with swimming, sailing, canoeing and kayaking.
bald eagles, blue herons and beavers.
playing games, sewing, and cooking.
eating home cooked meals by the fire.
singing and making music.
fishing.
big fluffy clouds.
walks in the rain.
and our biggest outing was a few barn sales and farm stands.
