Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

March 17, 2017

IMG_1189 IMG_5248 IMG_5250  IMG_5255 IMG_5261 IMG_5264  IMG_5270 IMG_5295 IMG_5298Happy St. Patrick’s Day my friends! I’m donning my Celtic brooch and we are headed to over to my mom’s  for an Irish dinner and celebration. I’ll take you along for the ride over on Instagram with some  snippets of the evening.

The month of March is a magical time as little bits of spring begin to emerge out in nature as well as inside my home. Rather than bringing out all of my easter and spring decor at once, I like to create at a slow pace.  In the beginning of the month the lambs come out reminding us of life and renewal, a tradition I grew up with. My mom has a beautiful collection of lambs herself. She gave me that one  pulling a little cart last year. I squealed when she handed it to me as I was always admiring it at her house.

At this time of year there is always a trip to the nursery for an Oxalis plant or two which resembles the shamrock, another symbol of rebirth. I prefer the deep purple and the variegated ‘Iron Cross’ varieties.

For fun I am sharing a few photos of a trip to Donegal Ireland that Chris and I took with my family  almost 22 years ago. It was an amazing experience spending time with our Irish relatives and traveling the countryside. My most favorite memory was a day we spent our  on the strand (the beach) collecting mussels and seaweed to bring back to our cottage for a big family feast. We are dreaming of our next trip to the Emerald Isle, this time with our girls.

Happy 2017!

Yesterday I was filled with a sense of peace and renewal. We hadn’t even rung in the new year but my heart was full of hope and anticipation for a fresh start.

So far it has been a good beginning.

A few shots take last night before our new years eve celebration with friends.

Happy new year to you!

Cider Celebration

November 14, 2016

If you know me by now it’s pretty obvious that I am a sucker for traditions and celebrations. I love the opportunity to open up and share our home to celebrate the seasons.

Since we were itching  to make more cider after Norah’s party we invited friends over for a cider celebration.

For hours we chatted, chopped apples, pressed, filled jars, sipped cider and enjoyed the beautiful day. We all agreed that cider making would now be an annual tradition at Second and Edgemont.

Our reporter/film maker friend and neighbor stopped down to take a few shots and made this sweet little movie.

Our little Norah turned 11 today!

She celebrated with some of her favorite people on Saturday pressing apple cider, playing outdoor games and watching a movie outdoors.

She made her own birthday (cheese) cake and topped it with caramel acorns.

Valentines weekend

February 15, 2016

We had a fun- filled  weekend starting with Hannah’s first winter formal dance. It was a 1920’s theme and I think she pulled off lady Hannah rather beautifully. And Chris was quite the dapper chaperone!

While Hannah and Chris were off dancing the night away,  Norah and I went out for Indian food.

Saturday was spent cooking, cleaning and sprucing up our home for dinner guests  that evening.

On Sunday we hosted an afternoon Valentine tea party. There was lots of chocolate, whipped cream, heart shaped sugar cookies and of course conversation hearts. But my favorite were the pickled radish hearts. We have an over abundance of watermelon radishes from our  winter CSA share and last week I packed a huge mason jar full and covered them with a salty, spicy brine. I was pleasantly surprised to find that within a few days they had turned a beautiful shade of pink. Cut into hearts, they were perfect paired with cheese and nuts.

We ended the evening with Downton and all was right with the world:)

Today Norah cashed in on one of her Christmas gifts and attended a 4 hour long cooking class. She came back even more inspired to cook new things (if that was even possible).

It is now snowing and we are getting ready to cozy up and watch this.

How was your weekend my friends?

Happy new year!

Yes I know I haven’t been here in almost two whole months!
All I can say is I have been trying to live in the moment.
No documenting, no blogging, no social media, very little screen time at all and to tell you the truth it’s been rather nice.

But after some time to ponder I have realized that I do miss this space.
Thanks to all of you for your gentle nudges and inquiries. It’s heartwarming to know that so many of you enjoy it here.
I do too.

We had the most lovely holiday. In between baking, gift making and decking the halls, we hosted a caroling party, a new years eve party, several dinner guests and tonight we end our vacation with a little Downton Abbey party. There’s a chocolate cake in the oven right now!

I look forward to sharing more of our home, garden, projects, traditions, recipes and every day life here with you in the new year.

Happy new year my friends!

Norah turned double digits yesterday. Ten years old!
It has been such a joy watching my little girl grow into the spunky, persistent, passionate, funny, creative, thoughtful, young woman that she is.

She had her heart set on a camp-out party which was to be held at my sister’s house but due to rainy and wet conditions the party was moved indoors to our home.
But it didn’t take long for everyone to forget about camping out in the great outdoors.

We cleared all of the furniture out of the living room where the girls set up camp in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace.
We served up a baked potato bar with all of the fixings- roasted broccoli, cherry tomatoes, avocado, black olives, sour cream, cheese, salsa, butter and bacon.

And for dessert we made a campfire cake!

Hello my friends!

I always think spring is my favorite time of year until autumn rolls around.
I am in awe of it’s beauty this year. The light, the sky, the fiery palette have all been especially spectacular.

Yesterday Chris I declared that Halloween should always fall on a Saturday. It was lovely to have a full day to prepare for our Halloween tradition of hosting friends for soup and cheer after trick or treating.

Pots of steaming hot chicken noodle, curried coconut butternut and vegetable lentil soups were served up along with warm bread, cheeses, caramel popcorn, apple pie and roasted pumpkin seeds.

While the adults sat around the fire sipping on soup, the young folk retreated to a room all of their own to trade candy.

As you can tell I have been hibernating these days.
I have been feeling quiet but our days have been abundant and full of all of the wonderful activities and traditions that bring summer to a close and welcome the beginning of autumn.
