Valentines weekend

February 15, 2016

IMG_1997 IMG_2014 IMG_2024 IMG_2028 IMG_2030 IMG_2035 IMG_2052IMG_2039 IMG_2049 IMG_2055 IMG_2067 IMG_2068 IMG_2077 IMG_2078 IMG_2082 IMG_2083 IMG_2085 IMG_2086 IMG_2091

We had a fun- filled  weekend starting with Hannah’s first winter formal dance. It was a 1920’s theme and I think she pulled off lady Hannah rather beautifully. And Chris was quite the dapper chaperone!

While Hannah and Chris were off dancing the night away,  Norah and I went out for Indian food.

Saturday was spent cooking, cleaning and sprucing up our home for dinner guests  that evening.

On Sunday we hosted an afternoon Valentine tea party. There was lots of chocolate, whipped cream, heart shaped sugar cookies and of course conversation hearts. But my favorite were the pickled radish hearts. We have an over abundance of watermelon radishes from our  winter CSA share and last week I packed a huge mason jar full and covered them with a salty, spicy brine. I was pleasantly surprised to find that within a few days they had turned a beautiful shade of pink. Cut into hearts, they were perfect paired with cheese and nuts.

We ended the evening with Downton and all was right with the world:)

Today Norah cashed in on one of her Christmas gifts and attended a 4 hour long cooking class. She came back even more inspired to cook new things (if that was even possible).

It is now snowing and we are getting ready to cozy up and watch this.

How was your weekend my friends?

A Birthday Brunch

February 17, 2013

and the celebrating continues.
this morning we had friends and family over for a birthday brunch for hannah.
we made a very large dutch baby (a recipe from a bed and breakfast on our honeymoon to alaska), potato hash with spinach and eggs, fresh fruit, cream scones and salty dogs made with fresh squeezed ruby red grapefruit. (from 3191Q).
the conversation and company lingered well on into late afternoon making for the perfect sunday.

i just washed the last dish and there is a game of back gammon waiting for me.
it’s 5 o’clock and we can still play by daylight!
spring is coming.

it was a perfect day for a canning party.
a breezy day with low humidity.
just right for heating up the kitchen.
there is nothing like working with a team of friends to make the workload light and the time go faster.
and of course to help feed kiddoes and hold babies, clean up a big ol’ mess and laugh a whole lot in between.
we had an assembly line that worked beautifully.
and in the end we were left with 11 jars of san marzanos each.
but we are not done yet.
there are plans for more tomatoes, pickles, dilly beans, blackberry jam and applesauce.

if you haven’t already you should check this site out.

we snuck away to the lake this weekend.
we packed light to make room for the tools.
chris built a floating dock for our friends.
they started early in the morning and were floating on it by the afternoon.

norah caught 2 huge bass.
we didn’t eat them but she wanted to.

i pretty much laid in the hammock all weekend.

we’re headed back in a week and a half for 8 whole days.
it’s not soon enough.
norah has fish sticks planned for dinner our first night there.

chris and i wrote a summer manifesto.

even though it’s not officially summer, last night we took a jump start with one of the things on the list.

invite friends over more often.

we like the idea of keeping it simple.

desserts and drinks.

last night we served strawberry rhubarb crumble with ice cream.

and of course there were cocktails.

had the pleasure of attending a kinfolk dinner at terrain last night.
it was a beautiful evening meeting new friends and hanging with old friends.
and the food was some of the best seasonal local fare i have ever had.

must go now. chris is shooing me off the computer to tell me all about falling water.

our 5th year going to assateague island.
a tradition.
this year there were 70 of us.
we took over an entire campsite loop.
it was windy and cold but that did not stop little people and big people from going in the water. (i was NOT one of them)
there was much laughter.
the one thing i always look forward to is laughing with my friends.

there’s nothing like coming home to a little something in the post.
and expecting something each month is even better.
when i read about natalie’s project, print: a year in film i knew i had to indulge.
not only because i think she (along with her hubbie Luke) is the cutest darn thing around!
but also because i think the whole idea is a simple and beautiful one.
i came home to my february mailing yesterday. i sat and read it three times in a row. it made me realize how much i love to read letters and how few i receive . it made me realize i want to write more letters.
and the photograph was beautiful. perfect really. i have it placed in the corner of a mirror.
and when people ask me who the picture is of, i think i’ll just reply “an old friend” because that’s what this whole thing feels like.
a little letter and a photograph from an old friend.
thanks nat! xo
