Hannah and Norah

March 20, 2013

hannah
:: you are determined to run the media 5 miler again this year. you started training this week.
:: you have been spending a lot of time drawing and writing in your journal. you drew the most beautiful picture of papa sitting in a tree today

norah
:: you told me the other day you have always wanted to be a dog but the one problem would be you would only get fed once a day. you love to eat.
:: you are such a night owl and you usually stay up later with papa while hannah and i go to sleep. these last few weeks though you have been asking me to sing you to sleep. your favorite is “stay awake”.

inspired by this lovely lady i think i’ll give a go at a “portrait a week” of my girls.
i am a bit late in the game but here goes.

norah
you wanted to invite a friend over for dinner this week and you had me help you put together a winter picnic on sunday for you and a neighbor friend. you get so much joy from cooking, eating and sharing meals with people. i am almost certain that one day you will own a restaurant.

pancakes and pjs is what norah suggested for a birthday party this year.
hannah and her friend were the waitresses and took orders for different shaped pancakes and toppings.

it was norah’s star birthday this year.
7 years old on the 7th.
happy birthday to my spunky girl who embraces life at it’s fullest each and every day.
life is so much more fun with you in it.

we woke up to a chilly morning
with nothing but shorts and tee shirts in their drawers.
i went up to the attic to see what i might find.
i threw down some pants and long sleeves for norah that hannah once wore.
and the pants i found for hannah turned out to be floods.

their legs are longer and their feet are bigger.
i know this is what is supposed to happen.

but when i look at these photos i can’t help but stare.

are these really my babies?

first year on the swim team.
first swim meet of the season.
first place for back stroke (norah).
first place for breast stroke (hannah).
first time i felt like a sports mom.

when the girls caught wind that chris and i had written a summer manifesto they wanted in too.

last night as the four of us were lying in bed ready to drift off we began to create a family summer manifesto.
since i am usually the first one asleep this is what i can remember. i’m sure there was more.
we have our work cut out for us.

:: ride a roller coaster (papa)
:: go on a picnic (norah)
:: swim in a creek, a pond, a lake, a river and the ocean (papa)
:: make homemade ice cream (mama)
:: make pies and crisps with each summer fruit (hannah)
:: master a homemade barbeque sauce recipe (papa)
:: canoe and camp in the pine barrens (mama)
:: set off fire works (papa)
:: find a nearby swimming hole (mama)
:: go crabbing (hannah)
:: invite friends over more often (papa)
:: make batik print tee shirts (mama)
:: make friendship bracelets (hannah)
:: have a summer restaurant on our back porch (hannah)
:: spend a weekend in cape may (mama)
:: eat tomato sandwiches (hannah)
:: ride bikes on the boardwalk (norah)
:: pick wineberries (mama)
:: catch fire flies (norah)
:: be together (mama, papa, hannah, norah)

last night hannah and i took our first appalachian clogging class

and i am in love.

i couldn’t stop smiling and giggling.

i love love love to dance and this style of dance feels like it grows in my bones.

so natural. like i have done it before.

maybe i have.

and check out a little film, by free people, of the kinfolk dinner i attended a few weeks back.

look fast and you might be able to find me.

hint: i am the one drinking that big ol’ glass of red wine.

yesterday as i was trying to figure out dinner norah asked to go on a picnic.
i thought it was a great idea.
we made some iced mint tea and packed a loaf of bread, some humus and a few clementines.
we headed to the park to find the skunk cabbages peeking up as well as lots of buttercups.
there was just enough light to head home.
when we got home norah made us each a milkshake.
then into the tub, some books and then off to bed.
i love tuesday nights with norah.
