i have let go of the fact that we will not have a proper winter.
instead i am welcoming with open arms the spring that has already sprung around these parts.
the light is changing each day and the hens have begun to lay again.
norah is already itching to dye some eggs.
thanks to our americauna we already have some lovely blue ones.
turning ten is a big deal.
hannah wanted a sock hop to celebrate double digits.
we all had a blast preparing and decorating and transforming our home into a dance hall and diner.
there were handcut french fries (thanks to a loaned out fryer), black and white milkshakes (thanks to a borrowed shake maker), mini hamburgers, root beer floats, and ice cream sundaes.
and there was lots of dancing, (the hand jive, mashed potato, the twist) and hula hoop contests to work off all of the eating.
a good time had by all.
happy birthday sweet hannah. xo
we went away for the holiday weekend.
i did not bring my camera but i kept busy making.
i finished the quilt for hannah’s birthday. i love her sweet little drawings that i embroidered onto linen.
and i knit a pair of fingerless mitts for a special friend’s birthday.
it feels good to knit again.
i want a pair for me now.
i have been feeling a bit tired in the afternoon the last few days.
may have to do with me staying up at night watching season one of this
boy is it ever good.
hannah made a mid afternoon snack of ginger udon soup.
off to finish the beef stew for dinner.
then when everyone has drifted off i will begin season two.
i think i may have to give in to a cat nap tomorrow.
Valentine Boxes
when i was young we always made valentine boxes every year.
a shoebox or oatmeal tin would be turned into a mailbox to collect all of the valentines from schoolmates, cards from grandparents that came in the mail and any other little love notes or treats that came our way.
then on valentines day we would open the box to find all of the love in one big burst.
yesterday the girls had a few friends over to share this little tradition of ours.
there was also whipped cream and strawberries, cupcakes and of course conversational hearts.
i had to laugh at how the messages on the hearts have changed since i was a girl.
LOL and text me!! too funny.
i thrifted a suede skirt a while back to have on hand for patching up any needed repairs.
i admit to being a bit excited when i found a few holes in the elbows of my favorite sweater.
i love elbow patches.
sunday started with a brisk morning walk.
then for the second time this weekend we went here. this time to celebrate my sister’s birthday. i got the falafel.
and while we were there i received a surprise belated birthday gift. my dream dining room chairs! yes i am in love.
i arrived home to a sewing party. since hannah got a sewing machine for christmas we now can have two machines going at once.
and the super bowl party last night gave me a good excuse to finish my stripey cowl along with a few glasses of red wine.
it felt like the weekend started a day early.
yesterday began with an oatmeal breakfast with my dad.
then out to lunch here.
a new book.
a few thrifted goodies including a parka, a pair of much needed wellies, a button down shirt that speaks spring, and a pair of caramel colored oxfords.
2 haircuts.
and a film fest created entirely by young folks.
i vote for 3 day weekends more often.
i think certain mugs deserve a little limelight now and again don’t you?
i bet you all have your favorite mug that gives you that comfy cozy feeling.
i know i do.
i de-cluttered the shelves and pantry (something i admit to having a little addiction of) getting rid of what i didn’t need and only keeping what i absolutely love and use (yes i am keeping with that mantra of mine).
what was left were my faves, all of which have some sort of history and purpose and all which are used by different people in our home.
many have been thrifted including my newest fave, the white bennington mug.
some have been handmade.
and others were gifts including the nicholas mosse mugs given to us on our wedding day.
my mugs are a little like my clothes.
some days i use the same mug over and over like a comfy sweater that goes on each morning.
and others only get used for a certain special occasion like that vintage black dress.
and then there are those that i had forgotten all about, and it feels as if i have a brand new wardrobe.
wow did i really just write an entire post on mugs?
